A Mendes Wood DM tem o prazer de apresentar a primeira mostra do artista mexicano radicado em Londres, Stefan Brüggemann no Brasil. A exposição terá lugar em um espaço em parceria com o Pivô - um projeto Edifício Copan de Oscar Niemeyer, março no centro de São Paulo.

“On Sociology (The Civilization of Speculation)” amplia o interesse de longa data do artista no aspecto formativo da linguagem, e sua, muitas vezes esquecida, importância na determinação da cultura. Na exposição, Brüggemann preenche as dimensões idiossincráticas da galeria com uma instalação de espelhos site-specific que vão de parede a parede, do piso ao teto. As faces dos espelhos são caligraficamente obscurecidas por frases - extraídas de manchetes de jornais e diálogos finais de filmes populares - rabiscadas em tinta spray azul, vermelha e prata.

Com uma sensação de espetáculo que lembra uma sala de espelhos de parque de diversões, o espectador é apresentado a uma impressão de distorção lúdica, hilaridade e sublevação visual. Os espelhos, como a linguagem, são fluidos e transitórios; palavras passam como pensamentos, reflexos passam como sombras no abismo de suas profundezas. Através da terceirização da linguagem popular, Brüggemann ressalta a importância da linguagem na formação de nossa percepção. Os filmes e as notícias nos meios de comunicação são reflexos essenciais da nossa cultura, imediatamente influenciando e manipulando a compreensão do público da sociedade. Para o artista, o texto extraído das manchetes e diálogos cinematográficas funciona como uma espécie de máxima ou idée reçue, oferecendo uma visão interna atormentadora na construção de valores sociais. Na instalação, tais máximas pairam enigmaticamente sobre a imagem do espectador no espelho.

Em “On Sociology (The Civilization of Speculation)”, Brüggemann emprega uma estética pop de forma perfeitamente integrada, ao mesmo tempo mantendo uma distância crítica em relação a seu contexto sociológico.
